Palliative Care educational resources during the COVID-19 crisis

During the COVID-19 crisis we need to continue to provide good end of life care for dying patients. With the number of dying patients predicted to increase, please use the following educational resources for further information.

Follow the link below to find out more about the 3 levels of information to support staff;

1. Core Sessions

These include education modules on:

  • Covid 19 and Palliative, End of life and bereavement care
  • Discussing Advance Care Planning
  • Discussing DNACPR
  • Symptom management
  • Dying in Intensive Care
  • Emotional Support and signposting

2. Additional Sessions

These include education modules on:

  • Drug management of breathlessness
  • Recognising the last months and days of life
  • Using syringe drivers
  • Sudden death and bereavement

3. Resources to guide staff conversations with patients and family members

This includes videos on the frame work of BBN:

  • How to have Advance Care Planning conversations;
  • Breaking bad news; Ceiling of Treatment and more.

DGFT Palliative Care presentation regarding DNACPR decision making for people with a learning disability, or people with impaired mental capacity.

As healthcare professionals we often have to make decisions around resuscitation and it’s absolutely essential that we get these decisions and the reasons for these decisions right.

This video shares the key points about the decision making for these patients, although they are actually points relevant to all patients, and also covers advice on documentation on the DNACPR form.
